How long does a kitchen renovation take, and what determines it?
October 14, 2026
If you have searched how long does a kitchen renovation take, you have probably found the same thing you find when you search what one costs: a range so wide it tells you nothing. Four weeks. Twelve weeks. Four months. Every number comes with a confident tone and none of them are about your kitchen.
The reason is simple. Duration is not a property of kitchens in general. It is the result of a handful of decisions, most of which are made before anyone picks up a tool, and once you understand which decisions those are, you can look at your own project and see roughly where it will land. Here is what actually sets the calendar for a kitchen renovation in Kitchener and Waterloo.
Most of the timeline happens before demolition day
This is the part almost everyone gets wrong. When homeowners picture a renovation taking a certain number of weeks, they are picturing the noisy part: the demolition, the dust, the trades coming and going. But by the time demolition starts, the majority of the schedule has already been determined by work you cannot see.
Design comes first, and it takes as long as it takes you to decide. Then measuring, then material selection, then fabrication of anything built specifically for your room. If a permit is required, the application sits inside that same window. A project where all of this is settled in advance moves briskly once the work begins. A project where half of it is still open when demolition starts will stall repeatedly, and every stall costs more time than the decision would have if it had been made earlier.
So when someone gives you a number of weeks, the first thing worth asking is what that number includes. A schedule that counts only from demolition to final walkthrough is measuring the easy part.
The single question that moves the timeline most: is anything being relocated?
A kitchen that keeps its existing layout and a kitchen that changes it are two completely different projects wearing the same name.
If the sink, the stove and the appliances stay where they are, and the work is new cabinetry, new countertops, new flooring and new finishes, then the trades involved are limited and the sequence is predictable. Nothing structural is in question. Nothing needs inspection at multiple stages. The work moves in a straight line.
The moment plumbing moves across the room, a gas line is rerouted, a wall comes down or electrical circuits are added, you have added trades, inspections and dependencies. Each of those has to happen in order, and each one has to wait for the one before it. This is also the point at which a building permit usually becomes mandatory, which is a subject worth understanding before you plan anything else.
This single question, more than kitchen size and more than budget, is what separates a renovation measured in weeks from one measured in months.
Why cabinetry sets the earliest possible finish date
Cabinetry is the element most people underestimate when thinking about duration, because they are imagining a product that gets ordered and delivered. Custom cabinetry is not ordered. It is built.
Cabinets made to the actual dimensions of your room have to be drawn, approved and then produced, and that production time is real. It cannot be compressed by hiring more people or by starting demolition earlier. It sets a floor under the whole project: your kitchen cannot be installed before the cabinets exist.
The upside is that this time is not wasted. Fabrication happens while other preparation is underway, so on a well-organised project it rarely shows up as empty days on the calendar. And because we design and build cabinetry in our own workshop, there is no supplier in the middle of that process. When a measurement needs adjusting after demolition reveals something unexpected, it is handled in the workshop rather than by restarting an order with a third party and waiting again.
A prefabricated kitchen avoids the fabrication wait entirely. It also commits you to standard dimensions, which in an older home usually means filler panels and compromises in the corners. That trade-off is worth weighing honestly, and it is a different decision from the one about duration.
Countertops introduce a pause that surprises people
Here is a detail that almost nobody plans for, and that causes more frustration than its length deserves.
Countertops cannot be fabricated in advance. They are templated after the cabinets are installed, because they have to match what is actually in the room rather than what was drawn on a plan. Templating takes a day. Fabrication takes considerably longer than that, and installation comes after.
The result is a quiet gap near the end of the project, at exactly the moment the kitchen looks almost finished and feels like it should be days away. Knowing that the gap is coming turns it from a delay into a scheduled step.
What lies behind the walls, and why older homes carry more uncertainty
Housing stock in Kitchener and Waterloo spans a wide range of decades, and the older the house, the more likely demolition is to reveal something that was not in the plan. Wiring that no longer meets code. Plumbing that was modified at some point by someone who did not document it. Framing that needs attention before anything new can be attached to it.
None of this is unusual, and none of it means the project has gone wrong. It does mean that a timeline given before the walls are open is an estimate rather than a promise. An experienced contractor builds some room into the schedule for this, which is why a slightly longer quoted timeline is often the more honest one.
The delays that are genuinely avoidable
In practice, projects rarely run long because the physical work is slow. They run long because of decisions made late.
A finish selected after fabrication has already started. A change of heart about the layout once the walls are open. A tile chosen without anyone checking whether it is actually in stock. Each of these can add weeks, and none of them can be recovered by working faster on site, because the work is waiting on a decision rather than on labour.
The second avoidable delay is the permit discovered halfway through. Approval has to be in hand before structural, plumbing or electrical work begins, and the City of Kitchener sets out exactly which projects need one. Planned for from the start, it costs nothing in lost time because it runs alongside design and fabrication. Discovered after demolition, it stops everything.
Living in the house while it happens
Most homeowners stay in their home throughout, and with some preparation it is entirely manageable.
What helps is setting up a temporary kitchen somewhere else in the house before demolition day rather than after: a kettle, a microwave, a fridge you can reach and a sink that is not the one being removed. The loudest and messiest stretch is concentrated early, during demolition and rough-in. After that the work becomes quieter and more contained, and the house starts feeling normal again well before the kitchen is finished.
The thing that makes the greatest difference, though, is simply knowing the schedule in advance. When you know which week the water will be off and which week the floor cannot be walked on, you plan around it instead of reacting to it.
Getting a timeline that reflects your kitchen rather than an average
A useful schedule is not the shortest one you are offered. It is the one that accounts for design, fabrication, inspections and the ordinary surprises of working inside a house that was built decades ago. Any contractor can quote an optimistic number. The ones worth hiring can explain what the number is made of, and tell you which parts of it depend on decisions that are still yours to make.
