If you’re planning a kitchen renovation in the Waterloo and Kitchener area, one decision looms larger than any other: the cabinets. Not only because they take up the lion’s share of the budget, but because they determine how the space functions, how much you can store, and the visual impression it makes every time someone walks in.
As soon as you start exploring options, you’ll face the age-old dilemma: is it worth investing in fully custom cabinets, or is it better to go with standard, more affordable options?
At Varoco Design & Renovation Inc., we’re confident that with our experience, we can help you reach a conclusion. Let’s break down the real differences in quality, durability, flexibility, and cost, so you can make an informed choice.
They are mass-produced factory cabinets. Manufacturers produce them in fixed sizes and styles, store them in warehouses, and you choose from what’s already available.
The upside: their entry-level price is low thanks to large-scale production. And if you’re in a hurry, you can get them quickly, because they don’t have to be built from scratch.
The downside: the dimensions aren’t very flexible. Widths typically come in 7.6-cm increments (30.5 cm, 38 cm, 45.7 cm, etc.). If your kitchen wall doesn’t line up exactly with those measurements, you’ll end up with wasted space or filler strips that serve no purpose.
Additionally, to cut costs, these cabinets are constructed using low-density particleboard, staples, and glue. In a kitchen used daily, the drawers start to warp and the hinges loosen within a few years. Their lifespan is around five to ten years before wear and tear becomes evident.
Here, the logic changes completely. A professional carpenter designs each piece from scratch, specifically for your kitchen. There are no limits on size, materials, or style. Every inch of wood is tailored to your home’s layout and the way your family lives day to day.
The advantages are enormous. Do you need to make the most of a tricky corner? Do you want a pantry that goes from floor to ceiling? With custom cabinets, there are no limits. No filler or useless gaps.
The quality is also in a league of its own. Instead of particleboard, we use high-density plywood boxes, solid wood fronts, and sturdy hardware with locks. And since we at Varoco Design & Renovation Inc. know the area, we understand how Ontario’s dry winters and humid summers affect wood. We build with that in mind, so the cabinets won’t warp.
That said, there are two clear drawbacks. The initial investment is higher, because you’re paying for top-quality materials and skilled labor. And lead times are longer: designing, sourcing the wood, and handcrafting the cabinets takes time.
Prefabricated | Custom cabinets by Varoco Inc. | |
Materials | They use particleboard, MDF, staples, and glue | We use high-density plywood, solid wood, and dovetail joints |
Fit | They usually come in fixed increments of 7.6 cm | Ours are made to the exact millimeter you need. |
Durability | Standard cabinets show wear and tear within 5 to 10 years. | Custom cabinets easily last over 20 years. |
Design | Choose from a few trendy colors or finishes | You can choose any color, any wood, any stain. |
Resale Value | Standard cabinets add almost nothing to your home’s value | They’re a magnet for buyers in the Ontario market, who know how to recognize quality craftsmanship and are willing to pay for it. |
Many people just look at the list price and that’s it. That’s the mistake. With standard cabinets, you’ll likely need repairs or a complete replacement after seven or eight years, especially in a family kitchen. Buying twice always ends up costing more than investing once in something well-made.
Plus, in Southern Ontario, high-end finishes really make a difference. A kitchen with professional cabinetry isn’t just more enjoyable to cook in—it directly increases your property’s value. Buyers in Guelph, Kitchener, and Waterloo appreciate this: they can instantly tell the difference between cheap laminate and a seamless, professional installation.
Go for the standard option if you’re renovating a property you plan to rent out or a temporary solution. Also if your budget is very tight and you need to finish right away. And if your kitchen has a perfectly square, standard layout, with no odd corners or special storage needs.
Choose custom-made solutions if this is your dream home or a long-term investment where durability is a priority. If you want an open kitchen that blends seamlessly with the rest of the living space. And if you have specific needs: a custom spice rack, a pull-out trash system, space for large appliances, or a larger-than-average island.
At Varoco Design & Renovation Inc., we don’t operate like contractors who buy prefabricated cabinets from a catalog and install them as-is. We believe your kitchen should adapt to your life, not the other way around. That’s why we combine the expertise of a full-service renovator with the precision of a local cabinetmaker.
We handle everything in-house: from the initial design to the final, precise installation of your custom cabinets and premium-quality quartz countertops. No middlemen, no surprises.
